Why burn your dive mask?

Why You Should Burn Your Dive Mask Before Its First Dive (And How to Do It Safely)

Why Burn Your Dive Mask?

If you've ever experienced a constantly fogging dive mask, you know how frustrating it can be. New dive masks often come coated with a thin layer of silicone residue leftover from the manufacturing process. This layer clings to the glass, making it more prone to fogging, no matter how much anti fog solution you use. Burning your dive mask is a tried-and-true method to remove this residue and ensure crystal-clear underwater visibility.

How to Safely Burn Your Dive Mask

Important: Before starting, always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your dive mask. Some masks, especially those with plastic lenses or coatings, may not be suitable for burning.

  1. What You Need:
    • A lighter or a long-handled candle lighter (avoid matches or small lighters to prevent burns to your fingers).
    • Your dive mask.
    • A safe, ventilated area with no flammable materials nearby.
  2. Steps to Burn Your Mask:
    • Hold your dive mask firmly by the frame or straps.
    • Use the lighter to carefully and gently move the flame over the inside surface of the lens. Avoid the edges of the lens where the silicone skirt attaches.
    • You’ll notice the residue burning off, leaving a light smoky haze on the lens.
    • Once you’ve covered the entire lens, let the mask cool down, then rinse it thoroughly with fresh water and a gentle dive mask cleaning solution, like our Gear Aid Sea Buff.

Safe Alternative If You’re Not Comfortable Burning Your Mask

If the thought of using a flame on your new dive mask makes you nervous, don’t worry! There is another effective way to prep your mask:

  1. Mask Prep Products:
    • Consider using a specially formulated mask prep solution, such as our Sea buff from Gear Aid. This product is designed to break down the silicone residue without the need for flames.
